In order for the UK economy to prosper, companies need to start trying to "Buy British" wherever possible. In the below article, we list just 5 of the MANY reasons why your business should purchase from a British manufacturer.
Opting for products that are made in this country by a British manufacturer helps the UK economy to maintain existing jobs and create new jobs.
How this works in the manufacturing industry sector is a sort of “domino effect” with main contractors and sub-contractors.
In it's simplest form, the manufacturer's increase in orders means that they need more people to handle the new workload and they will also order more from their sub-contractors, such as material suppliers (eg. steel stockholders) and surface finishers (eg. powder coaters and galvanising plants) who will also benefit from the increase in workload and subsequently will need more workforce too.
Most manufacturers now in the UK have a minimum of an ISO 9001 accreditation or are working in-line with the BS EN 1090 manufacturing standard. The ISO 9001 certification is achieved by demonstrating a commitment to a quality management system.
This quality management system ensures that the origin of the products being produced are fully traceable, manufacturing standards are in place and quality checks are being carried out ultimately allowing you as the customer to not have to worry about the end result.
In our industry sector, having this quality management system in place also allows you to understand exactly what you will be getting through our design and technical packages, with a formalised approval drawing to sign off on prior to manufacture on all of our fabricated products.
Having an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) situated locally or even just within the same country as you offers a massive benefit when it comes to purchasing and maintaining a piece of equipment.
Most UK manufacturers should allow you to attend their site which can be really beneficial in building confidence when using a supplier for the first time.
Having the manufacturer of your lifting equipment local allows for you to easily attend site, if required to conduct additional formal quality processes such as factory acceptance testing (FAT), non-destructive testing (NDT) or witnessing of functionality/proof load tests to ensure compliance prior to the equipment being delivered and used on your site.
Having a local manufacturer is also helpful when it comes to sourcing spare parts or when additional after-sales support is required.
As a business we do understand that price is a driving factor in the decision-making process when it comes to the purchasing of new equipment. With that being said, the cheaper product isn't always as good as it seems.
When you look at a product that's being imported from outside of the UK, the product itself may be cheaper than it's UK made counterpart and yes, may come with the relevant certification to allow you to put this into service, but once you take into account the carriage costs which may be subject to import duties the carriage alone may actually be a similar cost to the product itself.
Not the mention the 30+ day transit time from some countries via. sea freight. Especially due to the uncertainties of BREXIT, it may be that in the future import duties could be applied to products coming from Europe too.
If you do make the decision not to buy from a British manufacturer, then make sure you know all of the hidden costs upfront before proceeding forward and ensure that the equipment you are purchasing does in fact meet the Essential Health and Safety Requirements of the Machinery Directive (EHSRs).
This point is pretty much covered in the above paragraphs but in short, we should all be supporting each other as businesses and as individuals, to ensure that the British economy is strong, no jobs are lost due to production moving overseas and that we have safe products in use that have been manufactured in line with a strict quality system.
